How to store matcha
It is well known that the quality of matcha lasts longer if stored at low temperatures. However, it is not as simple as just putting it in the refrigerator or freezer.
The biggest challenge in storing matcha is dealing with condensation that occurs when it is put in and taken out of the refrigerator or freezer.
If you take the bottle out and put it back in frequently, storing opened matcha in the refrigerator or freezer can result in condensation, which is counterproductive in terms of preserving the quality.
At MATCHA DIRECT, we offer all our products in small 100g bags, which helps to eliminate these quality concerns.
When it can be used within about a week
If you plan to use the matcha within approximately one week of receiving it, it is best to store it at room temperature after opening to ensure quality.
After opening, storing it in the refrigerator or freezer may seem like a good idea, but condensation can cause the matcha to absorb moisture and deteriorate in quality. This phenomenon will be repeated if the package is taken out and put back in frequently, increasing the risk of quality deterioration.
Also, if the zipper is not closed properly, the matcha can absorb odors from the refrigerator or freezer, and this seems to be a surprisingly common occurrence.
For these reasons, it makes sense to store the product at room temperature after opening and use it up quickly. With a small 100g bag, it is possible to use it up at room temperature without significant changes in quality.
Unopened items that will not be used immediately
If you have unopened matcha that you plan to use for more than a week, we recommend storing it in the refrigerator or freezer. This will help minimize deterioration of the quality.
When using, take it out of the refrigerator or freezer and make sure to let it come to room temperature before opening the bag. It is best to leave it for about half a day. This will prevent condensation.
Once opened, it is best stored at room temperature as stated above.
